Meet Rusty

We went to the Uvalde Animal Shelter yesterday to look for a dog.  I’m sorry, but as soon as we got out of the truck it almost gagged me.  The stench was horrendous.  We did walk around for a little bit, but only saw one dog that we might have wanted.  It was a wired-haired terrier, but looked to be a really old dog, so we passed on that one.  By that time I had taken all the smell I could stand, so made a dash for the truck.

After we left there I decided to go to Wal * Mart and get a hair cut.  A very nice lady cut my hair, and we were talking about getting a dog, and she suggested that we try the Humane Society, so when she was done with me we drove by there. They were closed, but they had some cages outside with dogs in them, so we went ahead and looked while we were there.  We saw a puppy that we both immediately fell in love with.  He is a little ball of brown fur, and very lively.  He rides in the truck like a trooper, and was even easy to take on a walk, even though he had never been walked before.  He has the prettiest face.  Right now we are trying to decide when he should be walked, fed, and everything else.  He is so full of energy, and when we took him to the vet to be checked, to make sure he is a healthy puppy, she told us to walk him to death .  He is also a big chewer.  He chewed both of Donnie’s hands up on the way home.  We got him chew toys and balls, but he likes our hands best.

I have only been able to get one half-way good picture of him.  He just moves too fast for me, but be warned, there will be lots of pictures to come.014

He and six of his brothers and sisters were abandoned along the side of a road, so they are guessing he is part Chow, and who knows what else.  They think he is a little over 2 months old.  He is up to date on his shots right now, but needs another series in late December. They think he will be a medium sized dog, about 40 lbs. or so.  Between our donation, and buying the new crate, toys, food and water dishes, and chew toys, we have roughly $200.00 tied up in this new member of our family.  I am sure a puppy from a Pet Store would have been more, and may have come from a puppy mill, which I hate.

He also developed a runny stool this afternoon, and we are wondering if this is caused by nerves or what.  He has been put through a lot today, and even though he acts like he loves us and his new home, I know it is a lot for him to get use to in one day.

He has already discovered the mirror on our closet door, and thinks it is another dog, so we know he can growl and bark.  :)  This wore him out, so he is in his crate taking a puppy nap right now.  This is the first time he has settled down all day.

We were advised by the Vet, and the people at the Humane Society to crate break him right away.  They said puppies can be very destructive, so it doesn’t hurt for them to be in the cage part of the day.  You are just supposed to make sure they get plenty of exercise and walks.

If anyone out there has any tips about the runny stools, please share it with me.  We have him on Puppy Chow now, and we are hoping for the best.  That’s all for today.  Catch you all later…

That is great of you guys to take in a homeless pup. All three of ours were the same way and they make the best pets.

As far as creat training Annie our lab was 4 weeks when we got her and by 8 weeks she was house broke. We clicker trained her to ring a bell at the back door when she had to go outside.

Good luck he found a good home..

Years ago when I had a dog with diahrrea, the vet said to take her food away for the day. Seemed cruel to me, but it worked. Sometimes they get a little sick after getting shots too. He'll probably be fine tomorrow..maybe just a stressful day. He really is adorable and definitely looks like a Chow or Chow mix. I have read that some RV parks don't allow Chows...hope that won't be a problem.

Looking for lots more photos. Congratulations on the newest member of your family!

He is a darling little puppy and you will stay slim just trying to keep up with him.

I don't understand how anyone could house animals and call it a "shelter" and allow filthy, smelly conditions like that. I'm glad you went somewhere else to find a dog.

Congrats on your new puppy, Rusty. He sounds like an active, happy little dog and I'm sure he'll be more and more happy with his new home as time goes on. They do love to chew!!

Rusty is sure good looking! He's a lucky dog.

Cooked rice/rice water can help with loose bowels. I'm a big fan of IAMS food for dogs. It is a little more expensive, but provides all the needed stuff for a healthy dog and shiny coat, and also results in a denser stool. That's important when using those doggie bags! :) Rawhide chew sticks also help with the chewing all puppies crave. Much better than having them destroy your slippers... :) Seems like you'll have to puppy proof your rig for a while. :) Enjoy!!

Pudge, he's precious! I couldn't imagine traveling without my furkids. His stool issues could be from stress. Try a little boiled rice mixed with his food.

He is so adorable, congrats!

When Kerry was a puppy, he had loose stool occasionally but we never had to do anything and it just went away. We didn't crate train him until he was about 10 months old for no one was home during the day for ~8 hours. Puppies couldn't hold for too many hours until they got older, so we waited.

How cute! We've talked about adding a canine member to our traveling crew, but think we'll wait until we have kids for that step. Until then, I'll enjoy Rusty!

Aw, he's so cute! Oh course, it would have been a cat for me :), but I'm glad you rescued your puppy! That other place should be turned in to some authorities!

For some reason that published and I wasn't done! We feed our cats Science Diet and believe it or not, their poo doesn't smell. It's because it's all good products and what they don't digest that passes on through is "good" too. It's also firm, like someone else mentioned, I think about Iams.

Whatever, HAVE FUN!!!

Very nice looking new member for your family. He will keep you busy and give you lots of love. I also think crate training is a good idea, it will save lots of frustration.

Pidge, your header is beautiful. Is that your tree? Gorgeous.

Rusty is darling, and a lucky boy to be adopted by your family. We'll all enjoy hearing about him as he grows.

Katie was having the same problems, and I changed her to Royal Canin dog food for Chihuahuas. They have food for different breeds in different bags. Totally worked, and that's all I give her now. And not so many treats. The vet said to give her baby carrots - they are crunchy and good for her, and she loves them.

He is adorable, and I'm sure after about a week, he will be minding you guys just fine. The loose stool will go away after he adjusts to living at his new home. When you go to the vet, you might get his stool tested for worms, since he was abandoned and you don't have any idea what kind of conditions he was living in.

What more could you ask for. He is gorgeous. Glad and happy for you guys. Be safe out there. Sam & Donna.

What a cutie....I can appreciate the biting hands. We have Sadie pretty well broken. When she starts, I pinch her upper jaw/nose between finger and thumb and tell her No Bite. They don't like to have the nose pinched that way (lower jaw didn't work, her teeth are too sharp and it didn't stop her). Now when she starts it's much softer and telling her no bite changes her to licking...most of the time. Takes a lot of repetition.

If the vet wormed her, that gave Sadie really loose stools, especially since it was combined with her puppy shots (she was 9 weeks old). If she isn't better in 24 hours, call the vet (that's what they told us).

Rusty is such a cutie. When I got Angel that's about what I spent to get what we needed. I used the tiny bite sized treats from Pet Smart when training her for her crate and when I took her for a walk. Just be consistent. One thing that I never give a dog are those rawhide chews because they can choke on them. It happened to a Scottie that I had a few years ago and we had to make a quick trip to the Vet. Fortunately Angel is not a chewer. I really enjoy her company. Enjoy your new baby.
